Welcome!

Hi everyone, we hope you like our newsletter, "Access Wireless News".
This is the first one and we hope to send one out every month. The intent of this newsletter is to let you know what is happening in the wireless industry. We like to let you know about new handsets and rate plans coming, what other new technology is coming and how this will affect your life and your business. The newsletter is not a tool to sell you anything. We do believe in keeping people informed and if by doing so we may become the supplier of this new technology, of course we would be happy to do so.

We trust that we have sorted through the thousands of bits of news out
there and picked the ones we feel are most pertinent to today. We hope you enjoy reading it and would encourage you to send us your feedback and comments. If there are areas of interest that you would like more information about please do not hesitate to ask specifically for this information. We will do our best to get it to you.

Telus Mobility Network and Handset Changes

On 15 September 2001, Telus Mobility will start removing the old Clearnet equipment from BC and Alberta for relocation to other parts of Canada. This equipment removal is due to the duplication of two
separate 1900 MHz CDMA networks in BC and Alberta owned by Telus. For both original Clearnet PCS and Telus Mobility users, this means some handset changes and upgrades will need to be completed before this date. Telus is sending out letters to all clients affected, with details on what each customer is eligible for. Please contact us or drop in so we may take care of this for you.

Wireless Interest Stories

Early versions of "presence" technology will appear on mobile phones later this year. Motorola Inc., for instance, will begin tests next month of a system that will inform you ahead of time whether your sister has her phone turned on and, if so, whether she is on a call. That way, you'll know when to make the call, instead of guessing and trading voice mail messages all day. Ultimately, the system should be offering data that discloses a cellular phone user's geographic location, mood and availability.

Whitmore, the 36-year-old founder of The Protocol School of Palm Beach, has signed a six-month agreement with Sprint PCS in Boca Raton to appear on TV and radio stations throughout South Florida as its expert on cell phone etiquette. "I think wireless phones have gotten totally out of hand," Whitmore said. "People are abusing them and not using their common sense. And I find that more and more people are becoming offended by the use of wireless phones." Whitmore encourages cell phone users to let their voice mail take calls while in meetings or at dinner. If you have to take a call, warn others beforehand and step out of the room when the call arrives, she suggests. Also, don't discuss personal matters that others can overhear. For those who drive and talk at the same time, she recommends hands-free devices such as ear pieces, clip-on microphones and voice-activated dialing.

A phone with Java, like the Motorola i85s, lets someone download software that turns the phone into an MP3 player, mini-television for watching films, or a portable device capable of accessing e-mails. Programs written in Java can, in theory at least, run on any device, and many experts believe that Java will play a very important role in the wireless in the future. Vodafone is expected to begin offering Java-enabled phones in Europe soon. And proving that it's possible to operate a robot using a Java-enabled handset is only a start for Motorola. "This powerful proof of concept illustrates how J2ME technology-enabled handsets can be used to remotely control other devices over iDEN networks," said Peter Aloumanis, vice-president and director of Motorola's iDEN subscriber group. Other J2ME applications being developed by Motorola include a way for traffic police to perform checks of licences or car registration plates on their phones.

Did you know?
Did you know that today's voicemails can store faxes as well as voice messages? This allows you to have faxes sent to you no matter where you are and then forward them to any fax machine nearby. There is no limit to the number of pages of the fax that the voicemail can store. Our Mike voicemail has a personal assistant feature allowing you to transfer inbound calls to a different number. Your customers would hear your greeting advising them that if they do not wish to leave a message for you that they should press 0 to speak toyour assistant. Our voicemail has the option for 4 different greetings. For example, you could use one for business, one for personal and one when you are on vacation, or in a meeting. Our voicemail holds up to 40 4minute messages and will store them for up to 21 days.

Do you own a handsfree?
Handsfree is a must. If you drive and use your phone or if you use your phone while you are working, you must consider the many advantages of handsfree. Handsfree in the car has been studied extensively by the experts, and having a handsfree while driving is very important if you are at all concerned about safety. If you do not have one while in the car, please pull over to make or answer your phone calls.

What is Pocket Web?
Pocket Web lets you surf specially designed Web sites right on your TELUS cellular phone. Some of the things you can do on the web from your TELUS web enabled phone include; Send and receive e-mail from your current email account, check movie times, look up phone numbers, trade stocks, pay bills, get the most recent sport scores, read your daily horoscope, view your TELUS bill to see your last payment or make credit card payments on it, or play over 30 cool games. You will have access to TELUS' pre-screened partner sites including AOL, Bloomberg, HMV and MSN. While surfing on a wireless phone is not exactly like surfing on a computer (the screen is a lot smaller, it's not in colour... yet), you gain the freedom to access Web content and services even when you're on the move.
